I don’t mind being called Chesty Bond or the
human Buzz Lightyear but I’m no sex symbol.
With the pin-up good looks and his profile in full swing, TV ’s ‘Bondi Vet’ talks with
Darren Hallesy about animals, surfing and ‘cows with trunks’.
“So here we are delivering these pups
when the owner of the dogs whispers
in my ear that they had a video of the
conception. I was quite taken aback.
“Eventually the sound man had to
leave the room as he was laughing so
hard, and after the birth the owner puts
on this video for us to watch. I was just
After making a hasty retreat the
producer asked me if bizarre things
like this happen often, which of course
they do. Before you know it we’ve shot
a pilot and Bondi Vet was born.
“The current series was originally only
slated for 12 episodes but we had so
many stories to tell, along with trips to
Fiji and Mexico that we had enough
stuff for 16 episodes, so we’ve really got
a lot of material to cover in this series,”
Chris is also conscious of a show
having a sad story, when so many kids
love the show?
“Yes, there are the odd downbeat
endings, but my hit record is pretty
good, and we end up with a lot more
happy endings than sad. But I am
one of those people who thinks that
having pets is good for kids. After I
lost my dog, just six months later I
lost my grandmother. I doubt that I
wouldn’t have dealt with losing her as
well if it hadn’t been for losing my pet.
Sometimes it’s good for kids to see a bit
of reality, sad as it can be, but that’s life.”
Chris treats all kinds of animals, from
budgies and dogs to penguins and
elephants. So how does he manage to
be an expert on so many species?
“ This isn’t easy to answer, but what I
do is put animals into eight different
models. Cats are one group, dogs are
another birds and so on.
“Every animal falls into one of these
eight groups. All you have to do is learn
the small differences with each one,
for instance an elephant is a cow with
a trunk. Once I know how the trunk
works, I’ve got it covered.
“Humans are very similar to dogs in
many ways, we have the same organs,
and it’s fair to say that people are just
dogs that walk upright!”
Chris has spent a lot of this year
working on The 7pm Project, something
he enjoys doing.
“I absolutely love it. I never thought
when I was studying to be a vet that I’d
be interviewing politicians and reading
stimulating going live as there are no
second chances, it is amazing how your
brain and body can get something right
first time when you absolutely have to,
Chris is flattered from all the attention
from the ladies, something he finds
amusing. “I find it funny to be honest.
