RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre's latest acquisition, an Avro Anson arrived at
the Base recently with help from the Army's 9 FSB's 26 Transport Squadron.
Historic aircraft arrives for
restoration at Amberley
The Army sent a large Mack truck
to Roma to pickup the fuselage and
engines from the historic aircraft and
carefully unloaded their precious cargo
on their arrival at RAAF Base Amberley.
Although the restoration team have
only a skeleton and engines to workup
from, WOFF Dennis Doggett, Heritage
Centre Manager is con dent the aircraft
would eventually be restored and put
on permanent static display.
"The fuselage should be easy to
repair," WOFF Doggett said. "The wings
will be the hardest -- we will set-up a jig
so we can start from scratch."
Roma's Cli Rudge o ered the aircraft
to the RAAF after he sold the hangar in
which it was stored.

The RAAF's new C-17A Globemaster
Pilot Initial Quali cation (PIQ)
training program has produced it's
rst two graduates.

Stephen Maunder undertook their
conversion course at RAAF Base
Amberley, making them the rst
locally trained C-17A pilots.
Instructors provided the students
with 350 hours of programmed
training over 100 days, including 85
hours of computer-based training
and 120 simulated ight hours with
the C-17 Globemaster III Aircrew
Training System (ATS).
The C-17 ATS comprises the
Weapons Systems Trainer (WST), a
realistic, full-motion simulator used
for pilot training plus a Loadmaster
Station, Learning Centre and various

which culminated with ights at
the controls of a real C-17 and
acceptance by the RAAF's 36
Squadron, the students graduated as
quali ed RAAF pilots.
All RAAF C-17 pilots and
loadmasters previously trained in
the United States.
Moving pilot training from the USA
First locally trained
C-17 pilots graduate
to Australia means more aircrew
are available in the Squadron and
capability is increased through
reduced aircraft training hours.
The RAAF commissioned the C-17
Air Training System last November,
making Australia the rst C-17 ATS
customer outside the United States.
All other Globemaster operating
Air Forces conduct their C-17A pilot
training through the United States
