The State Government has tabled in
Parliament a report into the taxi industy
by the Workplace Rights Ombudsman
which could improve services in the
Industrial Relations Minister Cameron
Dick said the government would now
liaise with key stakeholders, including
the taxi industry, as it develops a
response to the report.
The 110-page report, compiled
after an eight-month investigation
into the taxi industry contained 56
recommendations covering various
issues within the industry.
"The government will now take time
to fully consider the recommendations
and determine our response to the
Ombudsman's recommendations abou
working conditions within the taxi
industry," Mr Dick said.
Some of the recommendations
• requiring taxi drivers to display photo
ID and customer feedback numbers
clearly in cabs so customers can report
good or bad experiences directly
• creating shared taxi service areas
between the Brisbane, Ipswich and
Redcli e zones to improve taxi
response times in those areas
• requiring new taxi drivers to meet the
national minimum English standard
and to undertake training in core drive
competencies through a registered
This builds on the changes introduced
last November that require applicants
to be aged over 20 years and hold an
Australian drivers' licence for at least 12
months before they can drive a taxi.
Massive 'Go Card' giveaway
Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the
cards will come with a $10 travel credit
as part of the promotion. The cards will
be available at upcoming community
events, online and advertisements will
run in local newspapers with full details
in coming weeks.
"Up to 370,000 cards will be
distributed from June 28 in addition
to the 30,000 cards allocated to be
distributed via the successful 'Go Ready
sessions for seniors and pensioners," Ms
The Queensland Government will give
away free go cards with a $10 travel
Ms Nolan said Go Card take up
has been phenomenal with the 100
millionth go card trip taken last month,
less than two years after the roll-out
"This year alone the Go Card take-up
has gone from 33 per cent of all trips to
60 per cent."
Take-up of the cards has been
controversial, following huge increases
in the costs of paper tickets in January.
Paper ticket prices rose by up to 40 per
cent on January 4, while Go Card fares
increased by 20 per cent. A rush to the
electronic smart cards left the system
struggling to cope.
But Ms Nolan said the go card is
working well, with complaints and
adjustments down despite take-up
There will be a number of other
activities across South East Queensland
during the go card giveaway, including
community events and new services.
"The giveaway also coincides with
the beginning of a new government-
owned corporation operating from July
1," she said. "Queensland Rail will be
responsible for delivering the public
transport system Queenslanders need,
with a focus on enhancing customer
service and reliability for commuters.
"There is currently an enormous
amount of work taking place behind
the scenes to prepare for the change
over and I look forward to presenting
the new passenger focussed
organisation to Queenslanders," Ms
