The road to losing weight can be daunting. But what if you could see what
it was like by sharing the thoughts and emotions, the highs and lows of
someone who is doing it for the first time?
Donna Fenton of Springfield has a 12
month plan to shed over 60 kg from her
body, and is sharing her experiences
online for the whole world to see.
“To lose weight, you don’t have to be
in a fancy house, you don’t need TV
cameras on you, and you don’t need
$200K as an incentive. I am proof that
this can be done and I’m going to do it.”
Life has been tough on Donna over
the last few years. Just 15 weeks after
her daughter Maddison was born her
husband walked out on her. After losing
her father in 2000, her mother also
passed away from Cancer. Just a week
after the funeral, Donna was retrenched
from her job. She managed to quickly
find a better job, but just 8 weeks later
she was retrenched again. The hits to
her life just kept coming, but she hung
Today, Donna runs her own consulting
business and in between studying
at University and raising a 4 year old,
Donna decided that she needed to lose
weight to get the most out of her life.
After tipping the scales at 126.5kg she
decided enough was enough.
“Life is just so busy. I was used to
working long hours, and to get take
away on the way home was just the fast
and easy option. It’s understandable
that so many people fall into that trap,
and I was one of them.
“My mother’s death made me decide
that I didn’t want to die young. I did
some research and the projections are
that by 2020 over 80% of adults in this
country will be overweight or obese.
“ When I’ve tried to lose weight before
I just got bored or went too hard, so in
doing an online blog I’m putting myself
out there with all my emotions, all my
feelings, all my ups and downs.
“ The money you spend on take away
food each week can quickly add up, so
I’m just using that money on a personal
trainer, and just look at the benefits.”
Only a month into the 12 month
challenge, and Donna is getting
hundreds of hits a day on the site,
from people all over world who are
encouraging Donna to shed the kilos.
To date, after just 4 weeks, Donna has
already lost 12.3kg. With a goal of 65kg
the training has a long way to go, and
her blog shows how she feels through
“I broke down at training the other
day, but afterwards I thought to myself
that I just did a session that I never
imagined I would ever do, and that feels
awesome. It just inspires me to go on.”
With the help of her personal trainer
Corine Richards, Donna wants to
change the way people look at weight
loss, and with the population getting
fatter every year, she had some ideas
worth listening to.
“If you have a job, go to your employer
and work with them to help you live
longer. Work through lunch breaks so
you can leave at 4 and go to the gym.
Healthy employees are fitter, more alert
and work harder, so sell the benefits
of this to them so they support you
in losing weight. I would love to see
employers embrace the concept.”
