Samantha feels she has been well
supported in her career choice.
"When I applied to join the RAAF, I was

not just in the military, but also in
military aviation," she said.
"I did think for a moment, 'oh my
gosh, what am I letting myself in for'
but I can honestly say that in 14 years
in the military I have not been exposed
to anything other than a bit of banter
here and there, and the odd times when

In late 2008, to mark two years since
the introduction of the C-17 and as a
farewell gesture for trailblazing female
pilot and former Commanding O cer of
36 Squadron, Wing Commander Linda
Corbould, a very special C-17 ight took
o from Amberley.
WGCDR Corbould led the RAAF's rst
all-female crew resplendent in hot pink
squadron caps during the training ight.
"That de nitely was a highlight for
me because WGCDR Corbould was one
of the very rst females to y in the Air
Force," Samantha said.
"She was also the rst female CO of an
operational squadron, and we had the
rst all-female crew."
Although no job is perfect, life in
the ADF o ers much more than other
careers, says Samantha. "The military
provides good training, a good life and
a fun job."
"I'd say if you are interested in ying,
seriously consider military ying as it's
a fantastic job. It's challenging and you
don't have to stay in and y military
forever. You can still join the airlines, but
join the military rst."
However, Samantha has no plans to
leave the RAAF anytime soon.
"Personally, I want develop as a
manager and a leader and extend that
side of my life and I still want to be able
to y, and I can de nitely do that here,"
